Over the past couple of years I get constantly asked “when are you going to do a book of your work”. Well I have decided to do a book to raise $2,000,000 to fight cancer. I have my work cut out but this is only 20,000 book sales, I just need less than 1% of Australia’s population to buy a book. I’m very happy to have OPA! Magazine with Dean Georgio and Steve Agi involved with this project. Cancer is a disease that has no discrimination to age, gender, race or religion. Everyone I have spoken to can name at least 5 people close to them who have battled with cancer, It is estimated more than 45,000 people will died from cancer in 2011/12

So the Book “In My Pants” will be made up with 30% Celebrities 40% Cancer fighters /survivors and 30% everyday people all wearing just my 30 year old Levi 501 jeans. The first 4 photos are from a shoot I did with Tina Sarantis 2 days before her first treatment for Breast Cancer. I was extremely honoured that Tina allowed me to shoot her having hair shaved off in preparation for her treatment and allow me to use the photos in my book. Urbandon A/W 2012

I had previously shot Don Pezzano from Urbandon’s Jewellery Collection with model Alicia Komodromos in a post called Alicia & Urbandon as seen on Fashionising (NSFW)

I fell in love with the way that he reconstitutes junk into beautiful jewellery and had not realised that he made clothing also.

In this shoot model Natascha Verkaik wears Urbandon’s clothing made from a U.S army field tent, and a painter’s drop sheet featuring British vintage military brass buttons (amoung other things).

I wanted to create an emphasis on the clothing, environment, feel and model and decide to play with focal plains and proportions by using shallow depths of feels & tilt-shift lenses.

The first image was shot by using a Cannon 400mm f2.8 and the other images were shot using a Cannon TS 24mm lens.

Due to the amount of people who search ‘Natascha Verkaik Nude’ and have landed on my blog, I thought it would be best to do a blog called ‘NATASCHA VERKAIK NUDE’

Please Note: NATASCHA VERKAIK DOES NOT DO NUDE

She does do simulated nude which means someone who looks nude however is not nude.

Natascha Verkaik is a very confident and comfortable high end fashion mode who had no problem getting her kit off for the camera or doing semi nude work in a fashion sense. But as you will see below, sometimes it’s better to not see everything because parts of a womans body can conflict with the story or emotion that I am trying to portray.

Natascha’s eyes and face are so powerful that they tell a story, an emotion that is timeless that i would hate to detract from the story by having the eyes wander down to an exposed breast, etc. I will always get the best expression from a model, if the model believes everything I am doing is to create an amazing image rather than to see a naked body. This is why I quite often insist models to protect themselves, with underwear, nipple patches etc, as I do not which for them to be in the photograph and nor do I need to see anything also.

I will always insist that the model needs to be comfortable with their body and to make sure they are covered at all times as I wish for them to give me emotion, feel and expression and I believe the only way a model can really do so is if they are 100% confident and comfortable in front of my camera.

My First test/training shoot with Deirdre

My first shoot with a model is about finding out what make them tick and how they interact with me as a photographer. The key I believe to creating a great image is not so much about the lighting, but more about the model and your ability to get a unique look out of them. If you look at some of the masters of shooting natural beauty, for example Patrick Demarchelier and Peter Lindbergh, they manage to capture unique never seen before looks from some of the most photographed women in the world i.e. Angelina Jolie, Kate Moss. They tend to mould and manipulate the models looks to their own style of photography. Just by looking at the models expression you can quite often tell who the photographer is.

So Lets get started, The Stunning Irish Model Deirdre arrives at the studio with her hair and Make up done just the way she likes it. So we sit down for about 1/2 an hour looking at images so I can find out what style she likes and what looks we are going to do. The first thing we decided to do was a really natural look with 100% Natural light. So I set up an area near a large window and put some music of her choice on, I took a test shot and this is what we got.

Natural yes, Pretty yes, Boring yes, this is what you will get out of Deirdre if you just lift the camera and shoot, giving her no direction at all and letting her stay in her pre rehearsed comfort zone. And this look will be exactly the same for every photographer that gives her nothing in the way of direction and emotion. This is not the look I was after at all so I decided to take Deirdre out of her rehearsed comfort zone. I noticed the freckles on her shoulder and that she had covered them up on her face with a layer of foundation. So I begged her to take of all her make up, we came to a compremise that she would take it all off expect her eye make up. Now that I had done that battle I decided to shoot this as a green channel black and white to bring out every freckle on her face. I put on some emotive music (Ludovico Einaudi’s Primavera) then I described the emotions I wanted Deirdre to feel while she listened to the music. by half way through the song I had taken complete control of her look and posing, the next 3 photos are a cross section of what we had created. Natural beauty yes, emotion yes, boring no.

Now it’s time we stepped it up a notch. Most models would like to expect 3 hours of amazing hair and make up, a $50,000 one off creation and some to die for heals, not when I’m training them. No make up, an over size shirt and some daggy mens underwear, Its not the clothes that make the model, it’s the model that makes the clothes. A good model can make a dogs blanket look amazing. Below is what Deirdre and I created over the next hour or so just working with her emotions. No hair and make up, No photoshop, straight out of hasselblad raw and she looks nothing like any of her previous photoshoots. BTW Deirdre is AMAZING and I can’t wait to shoot with her again.

I’ve been extremely privileged to work with one of Redkan’s amazing hair stylist Lorna Evans and her team. This is a series of images from her submission to the Australian Hair Expo awards. Make-up by Victoria Hull assisted by Joanna Blair and the Clothing Stylist was Elaine Marshal. I kept the lighting simple just using a Large octagonal soft box high pointing straight down at the models feet and a goboed light on the background. I did not want the lighting to take away from the awesome hair.
